Magna Carta — (1215-)
The Magna Carta was a charter presented to King John in 1215. It established a set of rules, written up by a number of barons and clergymen, that the King had to abide by. It was not the first such charter in Europe, there were several other charters in various city states throughout Western and Southern Europe. However, it established the Rule of Law in England and started a tradition of individual rights in the western world.
